LECTURE AND WORKSHOP TOPICS
I. Hormone Replacement Therapy: What Now? – Dr. Stephenson discusses the results of the Women’s Health Initiative which was halted July 2002 due to concerns of risks of stroke, heart disease, clots, and breast cancer with hormone use after menopause. Dr. Stephenson shares the history of hormone prescribing in America and the swinging pendulum of this controversial area of women’s health. II. Women's Hormones and the Mid-life Journey- This topic is designed for women in their mid-30's and beyond. A thorough explanation of hormone imbalance, perimenopause and menopause and the effects of hormonal changes on the brain and body are presented. Diagnostic testing and therapeutic options are discussed. III. Women and Heart Disease-Ten times as many women suffer from heart disease compared to breast cancer each year and since 1984 death rates from heart attacks have increased in women, but decreased in men. Case histories are presented to demonstrate the gender differences in heart disease diagnosis and treatment along with recommendations for heart disease prevention. IV. Obesity in America: A Growing Epidemic-Obesity in Americans has doubled in the last two decades, such that it is now a significant health problem with resulting negative physical and psychological effects. Dr. Stephenson will discuss the detection, treatment, and prevention of this serious public health issue within the context of family, caregiver, school, and community. V. The Feminine Life Cycle Through the Decades-Designed for all ages, this 90 minute interactive workshop for women journeys through the female life cycle from birth to senescence emphasizing the biological, psychological, and spiritual changes that occur. Case histories revealing hope, affirmation, and fulfillment through aging are shared. Participants also create a group sand tray by creating an outer picture of their inner lives. Lecture may also be abbreviated to 40 minutes without the sand tray. VI. Resurrecting the Power of Touch–Dr. Stephenson presents compelling research revealing the biological and psychological processes of touch as they relate to well being, stress reduction, pain reduction, and metabolism. She discusses her research in Biotouch, a Western Based energy therapy, which utilizes light touch to affect energy flow and enhance the body’s innate healing ability. Depending on time availability, several or all participants may receive a biotouch session. VII. Sand Tray Therapy in Women’s Health-Designed for women of all ages, Dr. Stephenson shares her research in sand tray, which is a tool for illuminating the patient’s inner life and bringing insights, sources of hope and self-awareness. VIII. Media Literacy: Why Should We Unplug?-In this informative, and entertaining lecture, Dr. Stephenson speaks as a physician and as a mother regarding the effects of television viewing on the brain, eye, and body. In addition the behavioral effects strongly associated with television viewing are presented as they relate to: body image, substance abuse, sexuality, sleep, appetite, learning disorders, violence, and stereotyping. Practical suggestions are given for breaking the TV habit in your household! This lecture is popular with PTA’s, women’s groups, parenting groups, childcare organizations, and educators. IX. Osteoporosis: Prevention, Detection, and Intervention-Dr. Stephenson defines osteoporosis and its risk factors for both men and women. X. Beyond Powders and Potions-Integrative Medicine and Research -Dr. Stephenson defines holistic medicine and its status in modern health care and research. She introduces concepts of her research projects in complementary medicine including: yoga, biotouch, and plant derived hormone replacement therapy. XI. Gender Matters in American Health Care-Designed for women of all ages, this topic reveals gender differences in health care settings as they relate to diagnosis and treatment. Through a better understanding of gender differences, women can be better advocates for their own health and their loved ones.
